** PRINTED MAGAZINES ** --- RED HERRING --- Number 3 is keeping up the expected high standard, bulging with reviews, solutions and articles. I think RED HERRING will build into a fine reference library to treasure. If you need to find any addresses, PD libraries, etc. you'll probably find them in here somewhere. Bi-monthly at `2.95 per issue, from: Marion Taylor, 504 Ben Jonson House, Barbican, LONDON EC2Y 8DL. --- ADVENTURE PROBE --- `1.50 per monthly issue, available from: Mandy Rodrigues, ADVENTURE PROBE, 67, Lloyd Street, Llandudno, GWYNEDD. LL30 2YP The March issue is now out, but if you can cop hold of the February issue, have a look at Paul Cardin's amusing advice for MORE >>>> authors, it's a little gem. I'll ask Paul nicely if we can re- print it on our disk. The current issue has the usual wide variety of features, plus the newer RPG/strategy pages. The continuing 16-bit versus 8-bit debate continues, with the 8-bitters putting up a good fight. 16-bit protagonists argue that their machines are best for large games needing extra memory and graphics, but the 8- bit owners revel in excellent cheap games in abundance, and point out that the first thing many 16-bitters do on buying such a machine, is to buy 8-bit emulators! With any luck, Sam owners may join in the fray, expounding the qualities of Sam. A warning to be heeded was given, telling people that have written games relating to STAR TREK, to check they're not infringing copyright by using names, etc., as PARAMOUNT have announced that they're to take action against transgressors, no matter if they're large or small. The next ADVENTURE PROBE convention is intended to be at MORE >>>> the Royal Angus (Thistle) Hotel, Birmingham, on Saturday, 24th. October, 1992. It'd be good if a few of us Sam owners could meet up again there, as last year's convention was so successful. --- FROM BEYOND --- NEW ISSUE EXPECTED SOON `1.50 bi-monthly printed magazine, A5 size, available from Tim Kemp, 36 Globe Place, Norwich, NORFOLK NR2 2SQ --- ADVENTURE CODER --- Issue 17 of ADVENTURE CODER arrived a week or so ago, still being produced single-handedly by Chris Hester. Quite a few interesting articles are in it, relating to programming games, but Chris can sometimes stamp his character a bit too firmly on the magazine, such as having three whole pages devoted to his favourite records and groups, which seems a lot as CODER is 32 pages long. MORE >>>> `1.25 per issue, from Chris Hester, 3 West Lane, Baildon, Near Shipley, WEST YORKSHIRE, BD17 5HD. --- CRASH --- & --- SINCLAIR USER --- As the old Chinese curse/proverb has it: "May you live in interesting times." Well, this certainly seems to be the case with CRASH, which is in the process of undergoing another change of ownership, as detailed in the NEWS section. We'll have to wait and see what happens to both magazines. CRASH, so far, has continued to give Sam some good coverage, and Ian Osborn writes a lively and interesting adventure column which is far too short! Pete Gerrard still writes his adventure column in SU, although he concentrates on solutions to games, rather than the more varied material we expect from Ian Osborne and Tim Kemp. --- YOUR SINCLAIR --- MORE >>>> Tim Kemp continues to set a high standard of adventure writing in his YS column, and has an extra two pages this month, listing 15 classic adventures, as well as a few poor games. The choice is Tim's own, and he wasn't particular kind about SUBSUNK, which I liked (probably because it was the first game I completed!) Compass software's BLOOD OF BOGMOLE is a free cover- mounted adventure, and there's also a good Sam feature in this issue. --- MICRO COMPUTER MART --- Sam material has been rather scarce of late, but MCM is usually a good read, if you're after a bargain, and the news and articles are always well written. --- SINCLAIR AND SAM COMPUTING --- WAITING FOR THE NEXT ISSUE!!! +++ DISK MAGAZINES +++ MORE >>>> --- SAM AMATEUR PROGRAMMING AND ELECTRONICS --- A new arrival on the scene, and already stirring up some interest. This is a new monthly disk magazine by Shane Smith (see advert for details), who produces the disk in Eire for `2 per issue. Although the subject matter is way over my head most of the time, it's easy to see how good the disk is. The available 'general interest' magazines seem nicely balanced now, and further such disks may cause severe over- crowding, but there is plenty of room for specialist magazines such as S.A.P.& E. (and ours, I trust!) Shane's done a great job of producing two issues virtually single-handed, and it's bound to succeed if others join in and send him material. If you're keen on programming and electronic wizadry, this is certainly for you. The material is in Mode 3, with impressive, customised text, choice of screen colours, print options and graphics to ilustrate articles. With the help of S.A.P.& E., I'm sure we'll be seeing some fascinating developments for Sam, as I'm sure the magazine will attract such enthusiasts. MORE >>>> --- SAMCO NEWSDISK --- Issue 2 of the NEWSDISK (edited by the infamous (?) David Ledbury) is as full as issue one, and has more playable demos on it. BATZ n BALLS is reason enough for me to have bought it, especially as you can use a mouse with the game. The NEWSDISK looks like becoming an essential and authoritative addition to the disk magazine scene, although I hope that there will still be plenty of material for the other disk mags, as NEWSDISK will probably be first with any stories. Contact Samco for subscriptions and prices. --- OUTLET --- OUTLET 55 has the same layout and style of previous issues, which is no bad thing, as it's of high quality, and readers know that all the regular goodies will be on each issue. Among this issue's items are a QL to Sam file converter, Mix 'n' Match, Excel II (by Marc Broster, who's probably wondering what to do MORE >>>> with his prize money!) and a selective file copier. Loads of superb letters and technical problem-solving. Although Sam coverage is considerable, there is still enough coverage of Spectrums to be of interest to many of us who still have the machine. I always enjoy OUTLET's loading of features, as you can automatically go through each item in order, so nothing is over- looked. Sometimes sadly overlooked, OUTLET remains popular with a dedicated and loyal readership. Monthly from Chezron Software, 605 Loughborough Road, Birstall, Leicester, LEICESTERSHIRE. LE4 4NJ `3.50 per disk, discount for subscriptions. --- SAM SUPPLEMENT --- Not quite in the same class as OUTLET, but good value, and always worth a look. Plenty of technical and programming help, and many utilities can be found on issue 18. Contents include a Mazemaker, a very good Morse code program, SamScratch 3.21 and yet more PRINCE OF PERSIA help. MORE >>>> Monthly magazine available from Brian Mumford, 57 St Saviours Road, West Croydon, SURREY CR0 2XE `2 per issue, `10 for six issues. --- FRED --- The usual good mix, and a high standard of games coverage. A bright and breezy style, and good value for gamers in particular. The Masters of Magic have a superb demo (note what happens when RESET is pressed) in machine code, which may give us hope that they'll be doing some classy m/c games before too long. `1.50 per issue. Available from: Colin MacDonald, 40 Roundyhill, Monifieth, DUNDEE. DD5 4RZ --- ENCELADUS --- ENCELADUS 9 will not disappoint owners of previous issues, as it's as packed as ever. The intro screens are so good they make me feel like giving up, and are a credit to those who've MORE >>>> done them. It's almost impossible to select goodies to mention, but the mouse programs are superb, and the EXPLODE! routine is magnificent, and I'd like to see it used somehow in a Sam version of TAU CETI, if anyone would like to write one! Published by Graham Burtenshaw, 6 Rawlins Avenue, Worle, Weston Super Mare, AVON. BS22 0FN `2.50 per issue.
